The Seminary For Me
By: Manuel Joaô
Year III Senior High School
For me the seminary is a place to educate, cultivate
and guide those who want to answer God’s call
to become churchmen or priests. Indeed not all who enter
the seminary definitely become priests, but at least
because they are disciplined by life (activities and
instructions) at the seminary, certainly those who graduate
from the seminary will show good faith ( even though
not all, but most of them are like that).
At the seminary I live together with friends who are
of course from different ethnic groups, of different
purpose. There are indeed those who enter the seminary
to become a priest, but there are also those who are
there only to draw knowledge. This made me confused
with my friends and in the end brought questions to
my mind, because at first I assumed all who enter the
seminary definitely have the same objective, that is
to become a priest, but in fact it is not so. However,
this fact did not detract from the feeling of togetherness
among seminarians including myself. I feel very happy
because I can enter the seminary, because in the seminary
there is more joy than misery. For me, this is because
of the strong ties of brotherhood in the seminary, so
that one person’s difficulties is everyone’s
difficulties and one person’s joy is also shared
by all.
Togetheness in the seminary has also taught me to share
my joy and sorrow with friends. Before I entered the
seminary, I was someone a bit reclusive, but since I
entered the seminary I started to learn to become more
open and more accepting, whether it is something excessive
or lacking, it needs to be completed together with friends
at the seminary. I realize that imperfection has in
fact made my life together with them more humane.
The seminary has really become a place that brought
change and regeneration in me. When I first entered
the seminary, I was very enthusiastic in my calling.
Though with the passage of time, sometimes I feel drained
with my calling, but with various activities and facilities
available at the seminary, I also realize that this
drained feeling can be filled by something positive
like praying, playing music, writing, contemplation and
so forth. And I also believe that when I feel drained
of my calling, prayer is something that helps me very
much. Then I also realize that the seminary is a place
for to test my calling. This condition of felling drained
of my calling also made me realize that as men we can
try, and in the end God determines. So that besides
my efforts, I also rely on God as caretaker in my life
to carry out my calling.
The calling is a mystery in the life of everyone who
wants to answer the call. Because of that, the seminary
is a good place for gaining an understanding of the
mystery of the calling, as well as a place to live together
humanely.
